LETTER FROM principal

Dear students,

“Our mission in this new century is clear. For good or ill, we live in an interdependent world. We can't escape each other. Therefore, we have to spend our lives building a global community of shared responsibilities, shared values and shared benefits. We believe that equity and inclusion are the cornerstones of a TRUE DEMOCRACY in which the worth and dignity of every person is valued.”

It gives me immense delight to invite you to the twelfth edition of DiPS Model United Nations, 2024, where the focus is on clarity and deliberation on global issues. When the youth of a country are empowered, it facilitates the ability to make informed decisions and catalyzes a nation’s progress, development and peace. Model United Nations is an educational simulation of the United Nations wherein students who participate will embark upon a life – changing journey that will help them develop confidence in leading others, become aware of global issues, engage in discourse with peers and draft policies to make the world a better one! It all starts here – with a dream to make a difference!!

Dear children, the power you hold is enormous; you are the change makers. The role of an international delegate necessitates a deep understanding of the United Nations as an organization and its functionality in making our world a better place. At DPS Bangalore South, we strive to foster this knowledge and also endeavor to facilitate transversal skills like perceptive thinking, team work, diplomacy, complex problem solving and effective communication.

Yours sincerely,

Anitha Bijesh

Dear Delegates,

It gives me immense pleasure to invite you to the 12th edition of DiPSMUN hosted by Delhi Public School, Bangalore – South. As an alumnus of DPS Bangalore South, I have had the privilege of being associated with DiPSMUN since its inception in 2013, in various capacities, including as a delegate. DiPSMUN has played an integral part in my personal and professional development, and I hope that each of you can experience similar growth through your participation.

It feels surreal to be writing this amidst such turbulent times. While Covid-19 has exposed many fault lines in our public health systems and highlighted the growing disparities between and within countries, we find ourselves in a period of history where war and genocide are being justified by bending the norms of international law.

The United Nations is not merely a silent spectator but is also being used as an instrument to take actions that are otherwise not permitted under international law. In such times, simulating the United Nations and acting as Member States would almost make us complicit in the failure of the international community to achieve peace.

As we witness history repeating itself and world leaders either committing or permitting atrocities that once seemed unimaginable, history also reminds us that there is always a glimmer of hope in student movements. Numerous student-led movements across history have made tangible impacts by influencing policy decisions globally. Multiple student-led movements are currently making a positive impact and pushing issues that world leaders want to sweep under the carpet. While it would be antithetical to say that a Model United Nations is a substitute for student movements that are harbingers of change, it may carry some benefit, especially at the school level. Discussions and deliberations over geopolitical and social issues help inculcate sensibilities within students who may not have had a similar exposure to extremely relevant problems that may be far removed that the lives of private schoolgoers in Bangalore.

In that regard this edition of DiPSMUN's agendas have been carefully crafted such that they discuss relevant issues, while focusing on issues that help students gain a better comprehension and sensitivity to their immediate environment.

Model United Nations have faced criticism, perhaps rightfully so, for primarily serving as platforms for upper-class networking and little else. It would be amiss to not acknowledge our privilege in discussing these issues in closed spaces without directly experiencing their effects. Model United Nations, in the manner that they have been practiced conventionally have been exclusive to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Recognizing these disparities, DiPSMUN has endeavored to make the competition more accessible in the past and remains committed to enhancing inclusivity in the future. This is an ongoing effort, and we welcome suggestions to make both the current and future editions more inclusive.

On that note, I look forward to welcoming you all from July 10-12, 2024, at Delhi Public School Bangalore – South, as we collectively strive to make this conference a resounding success.

Warm regards,
Karan Himatsingka
